Tasting - Opera Prima Sweet Red

Name: Opera Prima Sweet Red
Variety: 50% Tempranillo, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Daimiel
Country: Spain
Year: 2010
Price: $4.95

Winery Review: "Doesn’t try to hide its warm-climate terroir, with a soft texture framing jammy-sweet black raspberry, cherry, red currant, root beer and sweet tea. Drink now." Vintage Cellar wine notes

My Review: It's hard to believe that this is even wine, tasted more like a fruit cocktail or red Kool-Aid as some connoisseurs in class called it. I immediately sensed the cherry and raspberry tones and their sweetening effect on the wine. The Sweet Red is obviously a red wine but I had a deep, more saturated red hue to it than the other red wines. A nice wine to sip and one that most all can enjoy.

Tasting - Montes Alpha Syrah

Name: Montes Alpha Syrah
Variety: 90% Syrah, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Viognier
Region: Colchagua Valley
Country: Chile
Year: 2009
Price: $7.95

Winery Review: "Blackberry and cola aromas are cool and collected. The palate has weight and texture to accompany berry, mint, herb and peppery flavors. Turns more herbal and roasted as it unwinds. Pepper and spice lead the finish" Vintage Cellar wine notes

My Review: This syrah was without a doubt the biggest and boldest wine out of the bunch and I found it a bit much for my novice taste buds. It had an extremely bitter taste accompanied by a sharp bite, possibly a result of the pepper flavor. One of the Vintage Cellar employees told me it was matured in oak barrels and from a flavor point-of-view that makes sense because I'm not a huge fan of whiskey either, guess I prefer my alcohol to stay away from wood storage. Tannins and I aren't very friendly right now but I hope we can work on that rough start. Probably my least favor of this weeks Vintage Five but it offered some unique flavors without a doubt.

Region: Lisbon
Country: Portugal

Winery Review: "Despite its light touch, this is fruity and full, with its blackberry fruit
dominating the warm spice note and acidity. Soft tannins keep the wine together." Vintage Cellar wine notes

My Review: I enjoyed this wine's very light and sweet taste. Unlike most red wines I've had I really liked how smooth it was as I didn't notice any strong kicks during or after taking a sip. It sat well on the pallet with its fruity tastes and easy drinkability.

Tasting - Maiple Sauvignon Blanc

Name:Maiple Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2011
Price: $7.95

Winery Review: "Yellow color with green hints. Expressive wine, fresh, very aromatic. This Sauvignon Blanc displays grapefruit flavors, with hints of melon and honey. It finishes with bracing acidity and fresh mouth feels that make it a terrific aperitif and an excellent accompaniment to virtually all seafood, especially shellfish." Vintage Cellar wine notes

My Review: Compared to the Vinho Verde I thought this wine was more bitter and pungent in both it's taste and smell. It had a deeper yellow color to it and seemed drier. I couldn't detect any distinct flavors or added accents but the taste mellowed out after its initial bite, leaving a nice surprise. Overall it might have been a little too sharp for my liking but I wouldn't be too against drinking it.

Tasting - Encostas do Lima

Name: Encostas do Lima Vinho Verde
Variety:80% Lourerio, 20% Trajadura
Region: Lima sub-region of Vinho Verde, Northeastern Portugal
Country: Portugal
Year: 2010
Price: $4.95

Winery Review: "Pale golden silver color. Bright floral aromas of peaches, raspberry
and honeysuckle with a soft, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a crisp, tart citrus and talc accented finish. A delightful sipper that is sure to please." Vintage Cellar wine notes

My Review: Probably my favorite out of the bunch! I really picked up on the raspberry flavors and enjoyed the fairly light taste of the wine, nothing overpowering. I don't necessary agree with the review labeling the wine dry however. I thought it was nice and smooth with a beautiful golden color. This was the first white wine I've ever tasted and was very pleased, might have to go back and buy a bottle!

Wine Experiences

Hey everyone, welcome to my new wine blog where you can keep up with all of my wine endeavors and attempted critiques for the spring 2013 Geography of Wine class. Before you start reading my rookie wine reviews I should probably fill you in on my history with the drink, or lack there of. As a college student I've sampled my fair share of alcoholic drinks over the last two and a half years but wine is that one category that always seemed to elude me.

There's just something about it that I've always found off-putting, but most likely I just haven't found what I like yet. With so many grape varieties and processing methods it's near impossible to find two alike wines. My pallet has only had the displeasure of sampling some of the lower, or maybe even lowest, shelf  wines and wine products. The only wine I can cross off my list are MD 20/20, Franzia, and whatever really strong red wine my family had for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner this past holiday season.

So thus far I haven't quite found anything I particularly fancy. I've only really drank wine is social settings, whether that be at a party of a family gathering. It's interesting because when I asked my mom about the holiday dinner wine selection she said something along the lines of "oh I thought we'd try to be a little fancy." Sounds a lot like something Professor Boyer said on the first day of class.

I'm really excited to take this class so I can learn all about wine, allowing me to talk the talk and drink the drink. It's one of those topics I feel everyone should be somewhat educated in since its playing a larger role in social settings in today's world. I'm hoping to be able to identify wines from their smell and taste and more importantly, find a wine I like! Hopefully I can build up my wine repertoire and be a pseudo-expert by semesters end. Happy tasting!
