Tasting - Tinto Figaro

Name: Tinto Figaro

Country: Spain
Year: 2009

Winery Review: "Figaro is 100% Garnacha, made from a selection of the best grapes grown in the oldest vineyards. While not truly an "oaked wine", a short stay in oak barrels provides a nice spicy flavor boost. Bright violet. Dark berry and cherry aromas show a jammy aspect. Supple and gently sweet, with good lift to its black raspberry and boysenberry flavors. Smooth and broad on the finish, leaving behind a hint of spiciness. Extremely easy to drink and an excellent value." Vintage Cellar wine notes

My Review: This was my first adventure with the Garnacha, or Grenache as the French call it. On the nose it was evident that this Spanish wine has some degree of barrel aging when I picked up on a smokey, leathery hint. Got a strong cherry component with a raspberry side kicked that both ganged up for a strong backbone and lighter tannins than I would have thought given the darker red color. I'd call it medium-dry with a medium body and just a very approachable red wine overall.

I sampled the wine without food.
